WHAT TO EXPECT
First Consultation
First Process
- The first visit is the longest visit to our practice.
- There are administrative papers to be completed (15 minutes), so that we can register your details on our system – this can be expedited by completing the documents before the consultation.
Second Process
- Depending on your problem, there are typically several routine eye tests or “scans” to be done on your eyes.
- These include 3D OCT retinal and/or nerve scans, retina photographs, eye pressure testing (non-contact), and cataract measurements if needed.
- These tests can take up to 20 minutes to complete.
- If you have a serious retinal condition, you will likely have to have the pupil dilated with drops. This is very important for retinal tears, retinal detachments or retinal tumours. Most patients with fresh “floaters” or light flashes in their eyes, will also be dilated (usually just the affected eye).
Third Process
- For basic eye screening like diabetes, it is usually not necessary to be dilated with modern technology, allowing wide-field retina photographs to be taken.
- If your eyes are to be dilated, this can add 15-20 minutes to the visit.
- If your eyes are dilated, it is difficult to drive for 6-8 hours, so bringing along a driver is essential (contact us if you are uncertain if one is required).
Fourth Process
- After basic tests and dilatation, you will be seen by Dr Du Toit in one of our consultation suits. He will thoroughly examine your eyes through a microscope. After the examination, he will look at your tests and discuss with you the problem in your eyes and all the possible solutions to correct this.
- If you require any surgery, this will be discussed in depth with you.
- For your first visit, please allow 1h at our practice.
- In certain cases, like emergency retinal tears or retinal leakage, the consultation could include emergency retina laser treatment or eye injections, which can add another 30 minutes to the visit.
