Dr Du Toit’s practice is located in Walmer, Port Elizabeth, at Bay Eye Hospital.

The hospital is home to four ophthalmologists with expertise across a range of ophthalmic subspecialties, allowing patients access to comprehensive eye care. The practice is equipped with modern diagnostic technology, and the hospital’s theatres feature advanced surgical equipment, including 3D microscopes and integrated 3D eye imaging systems.

Dr Du Toit is supported by a team of qualified optometrists and ophthalmic assistants who are committed to providing professional, compassionate care and helping to ensure that each patient’s visit is as comfortable as possible.

Dr Schalk Du Toit’s Biography

Dr Du Toit’s career has included a number of academic achievements, including receiving the Geoff Howes Medal for the best candidate in the Diploma of Ophthalmology examination in 2010 and the Justin Van Selm Medal for the best candidate in the Ophthalmology Board Examination in 2015. He has contributed to ophthalmic research through publications in both local and international journals and has presented papers at South African ophthalmology congresses.

Dr Du Toit completed his specialist ophthalmology training with distinction (cum laude) at Stellenbosch University before relocating with his family to Port Elizabeth, where he has been in private practice for the past 10+ years.

His clinical interests include cataract surgery, glaucoma, and retinal conditions. He completed the European VitreoRetinal Training School in Bremen, Germany, and regularly attends international conferences and educational programmes to keep up to date with developments in the diagnosis and management of glaucoma and retinal disease. Over the course of his career, he has performed more than 8000 cataract procedures, along with a wide range of other ophthalmic surgeries.

Dr Du Toit is committed to providing ethical, patient-centred care, with treatment recommendations guided by each individual’s needs and best interests. The practice combines this approach with modern diagnostic and surgical technology to deliver comprehensive, evidence-based eye care.
